The transition from IPv4 to IPv6 represents one of the most significant infrastructure changes in internet history, driven by IPv4 address exhaustion and the need for enhanced network capabilities. This study examines IPv6 adoption patterns across major metropolitan areas in the United States, comparing Internet Service Provider (ISP) deployment strategies and network performance characteristics. Through comprehensive analysis of deployment metrics, quality of service parameters, and transition mechanisms, this research evaluates the current state of IPv6 implementation in urban centers including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Phoenix. The findings reveal substantial variation in adoption rates among ISPs, with performance measurements indicating that IPv6 networks demonstrate comparable or superior latency and throughput characteristics relative to IPv4 in most scenarios. However, challenges persist in dual-stack configuration optimization and complete infrastructure modernization. This comparative study provides empirical evidence for stakeholders navigating the IPv6 transition landscape and identifies critical factors influencing successful deployment in densely populated metropolitan regions.
