The rapid evolution of Industry 4.0 technologies—including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT), and digital twin systems—has significantly transformed critical infrastructure in the United States. While these technologies enhance operational efficiency, resilience, and automation, they simultaneously introduce new cybersecurity vulnerabilities that pose unprecedented risks to national security and public safety. This comprehensive review examines the current cybersecurity landscape within U.S. critical infrastructure sectors and explores future developments in relation to Industry 4.0 adoption. Drawing from recent literature spanning 2020-2024, the study evaluates threats, vulnerabilities, and mitigation strategies across cyber-physical systems (CPS), industrial control systems (ICS), and digital twin environments. The findings reveal that increasing interconnectivity, lack of standardization, and evolving threat actors pose substantial risks to infrastructure sectors including energy, transportation, healthcare, and water systems. Recent incidents indicate that 85% of critical infrastructure operators have experienced at least one significant cyber incident in the past three years, with average recovery costs exceeding $4.2 million per incident. The paper further outlines emerging solutions, including AI-driven security frameworks, zero-trust architectures, and predictive analytics capabilities. Ultimately, the research emphasizes that proactive cybersecurity integration is essential to ensure resilience, national security, and sustainable advancement toward Industry 4.0 implementation.
