This article examines the pervasive influence of social media platforms in amplifying polarization during emergency situations, including health crises, natural disasters, and armed conflicts. Drawing on a comprehensive review of current peer-reviewed literature and credible reports, it defines digital echo chambers and distinguishes them from filter bubbles, elucidating the psychological and algorithmic mechanisms that foster their formation. The article provides in-depth case studies, particularly focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic, to illustrate how echo chambers facilitate the spread of misinformation, erode public trust, and undermine collective action. Further analysis extends to natural disasters and armed conflicts, demonstrating how polarized narratives disrupt emergency response efforts and exacerbate societal divisions. The discussion synthesizes cross-cutting themes, highlighting the complex interplay of human behavior and technological design. Ultimately, the article underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts among platforms, policymakers, and communicators to mitigate the detrimental impacts of digital echo chambers during crises, promoting information diversity and rebuilding shared understanding.
